What is Beta Sigma Psi?

Beta Sigma Psi is an organization created in 1925 at the University of Illinois to offer a college experience that is rooted in the Christian faith. Our mission is to provide an environment in which Lutheran college men can grow spiritually, scholastically, and socially. We undertake programs designed to develop Christian leaders, encourage academic excellence, and create lifelong friends. But perhaps the most important reason for you to join Beta Sigma Psi is the brotherhood - the bonds formed with your brothers, which are stronger than any friendships you have ever experienced.

Do I have to be Lutheran to join?

No.

Does Beta Sigma Psi embrace any specific Synod?

No. Beta Sigma Psi was chartered as an organization for any Lutheran men and we have long embraced all synods of the Lutheran faith. We also are active in both of the Lutheran campus churches.

How can Beta Sigma Psi benefit a college man?

Beta Sigma Psi helps turn young college students into mature, well-rounded gentlemen through its three chief principles, called the 3 S's. We are Spiritually grown, Scholastically superior, and Socially involved.

To encourage spiritual growth, members regularly attend their church of choice. Once each month the house as a whole picks a church in the community to attend together. To make sure that the house remains reverent in its endeavors we designate one of the campus pastors as our pastoral adviser. In addition we hold regular bible studies at our house led by our Chaplain and participate in community service events with the campus churches.

Scholastically, our fraternity aids in many ways as well. The house academic chairman pairs upperclassmen with underclassmen as part of an academic mentorship program. To incentivise academic achievement, we offer monetary rewards to the most improved member, member with the highest GPA, and to members earning a 3.0 GPA. We consistently achieve a house GPA which places us in the top 5 of all UIUC fraternities.

Socially, we host many events geared at building strong bonds between brothers and branching out to the greater Greek community. These events can include anything from exchanges with sororities to formal dances to road trips around the Midwest.

Another huge benefit about Beta Sigma Psi is that we have our own fraternity house. It is located on 706 W. Ohio St, a ten-minute walk from the Quad in a quiet neighborhood of Urbana. (About the same distance to your classes as the six-pack dorms). The house is a comfortable environment where you have the freedoms of your own house. The house contracts meals through College Chefs (who provide us nine meals per week), and a full kitchen is available to members 24 hours a day. Also, we have a quiet lounge where you can study and hang out with friends. Plus, we have a basement full of entertainment options, such as a pool table, ping-pong table, and television room. We encourage our members to live in the house, because it builds brotherhood. At college there are many temptations to fall away from God, and living in the house with other Christians helps us to keep the faith. It is a wonderful opportunity to increase your faith and build a life that is centered on Christ.

What happens after deciding to join?

After joining, new members go through a semester of Associate Membership while they learn about the fraternity and show the actives that they are worthy of becoming a Beta Sig.

  1. The tasks asked of Associate members are:
  2. Learning about Beta Sigma Psi and the fraternity system
  3. Working with fellow Associate members on a house project
  4. Attending House events with the Active members
  5. Achieving at least a 2.7 GPA to be activated
  6. Giving back to the community through church and service activities
  7. Learning about the Lutheran faith if you are not a confirmed Lutheran

These activities are designed to build brotherhood. In doing these tasks we want them to have a feeling of belonging to a Lutheran brotherhood at the University. Beta Sigma Psi is here to help make the adjustment from high school to college and help to further members' Christian life at a place where it is easy to lose sight of God.

How much does it cost?

You will find that Beta Sigma Psi is an excellent alternative to the dorms. The University of Illinois requires all new students to live in certified housing for at least one year. However, they fail to mention that certified housing includes many fraternity houses on campus. Our house is unique in that we let freshmen live in the house. Thus, many members of Beta Sigma Psi have never had to deal with the problems in the dorms. Beta Sigma Psi offers a home-like atmosphere that can't be matched by the dorms and house-mates who have a common grounding in the true Christian faith.

In addition to all the other benefits, living at Beta Sigma Psi is even more affordable than living in the dorms. Check out the information on our Housing Scholarship to see how we compare.

We realize that many students may have signed contracts to the dorms but it's not too late to sign up with Beta Sigma Psi. You will have until May 15, 2022 to break your Dorm contract without penalty! Let us know if you are considering Beta Sigma Psi and we will be happy to provide you with more information or give you a tour. All Freshmen and 1st Year Transfer Students sign contracts as tenants and have no obligation to join the fraternity. However, after your first year you must join the organization if you plan to remain in the house.
