Socially, Beta Sigma Psi maintains an active role in the Greek community. While the spiritual and scholastic elements of Beta Sigma Psi are a priority, the social side is definitely not neglected. We feel that one must include this important principle as well to truly become a well-rounded Christian gentlemen.
Many members participate in Block I and Orange Krush student cheering sections while other members purchase regular student tickets to games. Before and after football games our alumni host a Beta Sig tailgate located just steps from the Northwest entrance to Memorial Stadium. It is always a great time!
Actives from our house and from a sorority get together for an event to get to know each other better. Some exchanges in the past couple of years have included ice-skating, pumpkin picking in the orchard, movie night, mini golf, and a wine night at our chapter house. Sometimes the exchanges are themed. Recent exchange themes include: Mardi Gras Masquerade, 90's, Hunters and Prey, How I Met Your Mother (dress like your parents), and Ancient Greece/Toga.
During these respective weekends (Moms in the Spring and Dads in the Fall) we'll host a few activities at the house and then often go to events on campus together. Mom's weekend involves a dinner, a meeting of the Beta Sig Mom's Association, and trips to the craft show, flower show, and the school musical. Dad's Weekend typically involves a good barbeque at the Beta Sig house before the football game.
Beta Sigs take part in many philanthropies and community service activities around campus. Recently, we have participated in tug of war contests, pancake suppers, bags tournaments, and broomball tournaments. Philanthropies are always a fun event to meet others in the Greek community and raise money for good causes. Every Spring, Beta Sigma Psi hosts our own philanthropy which is a dinner which benefits Habitat for Humanity. In addition to raising funds, members also volunteer times on the weekends to assist in the building of homes for less fortunate families through Habitat for Humanity.
Every year Beta Sig alumni of all ages (from class of 2015 to class of 1955) once again descend on Champaign-Urbana. On Friday night, there is an alumni mixer at the chapter house where actives can meet alumni. The Homecoming Banquet and Formal is typically held on Saturday night. We always look forward to these events to meet our alumni and hear stories about their time in Beta Sigma Psi.
Beta Sig alumni live across the country, from California to Connecticut, and hold a wide variety of jobs, from Chicago Public School teachers to Illinois Supreme Court Justices. In the past couple of years, recent alums have enrolled in law school and graduate school at Stanford University, Purdue University, and the University of Illinois, and Northern Illinois University. They have also taken jobs with the Department of Homeland Security and at the corporate offices of major retailers and insurance companies, so Homecoming is always a great networking opportunity as well!
A staple of any chapter of Beta Sigma Psi, Gold Rose formal, is held towards the end of the Spring semester. In recent years, our chapter has done everything from a dance on a Mississippi Riverboat to a formal banquet in one of Indianapolis’ finest hotels to a trip to The Wilderness Lodge Resort in the Wisconsin Dells. Every year the brothers vote, and one of the dates is chosen as “Gold Rose Sweetheart.” We present her with flowers and serenade her toward the end of the formal.
